Standing on the "No's"

Updated: Apr 8, 2020

After The Bachelorette, I decided to use my platform to step outside of the complacent space I was living within and fly. I was determined to use my platform to pursue my dreams and inspire others to do the same. Today, you see my work as a media personality on ESPN, MTV, ExtraTV, etc. but these doors were not easily opened for me despite popular belief. I was told more no's than anything and no one wanted to look past my time on The Bachelorette. But I knew that I was more than a bachelorette. I had a life before the television show and I was determined to build a life after the show. Michelle Obama said, "failure is a feeling long before it is an actual result." So, I stood on those no's and used them as stepping stones to knock down those doors and show my worth. That persistence, confidence, hard work, and belief in myself is what put me where I am today.

This is just one example as to why I decided to become the bachelorette. I originally said “no” when approached to become the Bachelor franchise’s first African-American Bachelorette. After some soul searching I realized that being chosen as the first African-American lead of this franchise is an honor. This role is bigger than me as I have the opportunity to represent myself and be shown in a positive manner to an audience that has not seen that before. I have the chance to be a positive role model to a group of young girls who have not seen themselves represented in this franchise. These young girls can look at reality television on a primetime network and see an African-American woman that looks like them and can be empowered by this presence. I became the Bachelorette to inspire, empower, uplift, and motivate all women, professionals, and individuals.
