My Journey in My Father's Footsteps

Updated: Apr 8, 2020

The great Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. said, "Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere. We are caught in an inescapable network of mutuality, tied in a single garment of destiny. Whatever affects one directly, affects all indirectly." As a child and into adulthood, I have always been mesmerized by Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. from his actions, teachings, speeches, and legacy.

Many are familiar with the Aristotle quote, "The Law is reason free from passion", but that does not mean that you as an individual or the work you do as an attorney have to be free from desire. Being an attorney to me means being an advocate for justice, for people, and for the truth. There are many people that ask me why I wanted to be an attorney. My response is always that the answer lies somewhere between my father, Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., and Matlock. If, however, I look deeper into the question and think about my answer and my truth, I wanted to be a lawyer to help others, make a difference, and follow in my father’s footsteps. I learned that whether I was watching Matlock for entertainment, studying the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. or firsthand following the historical footsteps my father walked before me. This is why I am passionate about the law.
